The Millennium Nucleus MIGRA celebrates the awarding of the RECSA Project – Network for the Study of Social Control in the Americas, funded by Chile’s International Collaboration Fund (FOVI–ANID). The initiative is led by the Center for Law and Society Research (CIDS) and brings together over ten researchers from Chile and the United States.
Mayra Feddersen, principal investigator at MIGRA and co-investigator of RECSA, emphasized the importance of this recognition:
“This project acknowledged the urgent need to understand how states exert social control over migrants and people in contact with the criminal justice system through comparative research.”
The core objective of RECSA is to examine the convergence of criminal and immigration control mechanisms across the Americas, and how these institutional practices impact migrants’ rights, social integration, and everyday life. The project’s agenda includes research stays, international workshops, and the joint development of analytical frameworks.
“This initiative allowed us to connect Chile’s experience to global debates on punishment and migration, positioning our team as a key actor in the comparative analysis of social control,” said Feddersen.
Beyond academic contributions, the project aspires to have a direct impact on public policy.
“We aimed to provide evidence that helps shape more effective and rights-respecting public policies. International comparisons will help us understand what works, what doesn’t, and why,” she explained.
Aligned with MIGRA’s mission, the project advances our understanding of how institutions shape inclusion—or exclusion—of migrant populations. RECSA marks a new step toward building a critical and collaborative transnational academic community.
