Low Fertility and Demographic Change in Chile

Alejandra Abufhele, Principal Investigator at the Millennium Nucleus MIGRA and faculty member at the School of Government of Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, published an opinion column in La Segunda addressing Chile’s sustained decline in fertility rates. Drawing on newly released data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), she analyzed demographic trends such as postponed motherhood, reduced adolescent fertility, and the rising proportion of migrant mothers. The column highlights structural barriers to parenthood—such as high childcare costs, limited institutional support, and gender inequalities in caregiving—while calling for evidence-based public policy responses.
