Isabel Araya undertakes international research stay in Paris with support from MIGRA

June 15, 2026

Between May and June, Isabel Araya, PhD candidate in Anthropology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and researcher at MIGRA, is undertaking an international research stay at the Centre de Recherche et de Documentation sur les Amériques (CREDA) in Paris, France. CREDA is an interdisciplinary research center in the humanities and social sciences affiliated with the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).

This research stay was made possible through MIGRA’s internal funding scheme, which supports international research experiences aimed at strengthening the academic development and global engagement of its members.

Isabel’s research explores Afro-descendant festive expressions along the Chile–Peru border, examining the intersections of memory, racialization, embodiment, and performative practices. During her stay at CREDA, she is deepening the core themes of her doctoral research and engaging with scholars specializing in Andean studies and Afro-religious practices.

The research stay also provides an opportunity to present and discuss preliminary findings from her dissertation, fostering international dialogue and collaboration around migration, borders, and racialization in Latin America.

As part of this academic experience, Isabel also presented the paper “Black Dances on the Andean Border” at the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Congress, held in Paris, within the panel “Resistance in Public Space: Art and Performance.”

This experience reflects MIGRA’s commitment to supporting the training of its researchers and fostering international academic networks, while advancing research on migration, mobility, and the social transformations taking place across borders.
