Last week, between Monday 24th and Wednesday 26th of August, Nucleo MIGRA held its Winter School. This initiative gathers young researchers and scholars from South America, who share their research projects, receive comments and also attend lectures on quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods to carry out research on migration from the varied disciplines they come from. This year, the school received 21 students, as well as 2 international professors. We specially thank Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, for receiving us in their Vitacura Campus.
During Monday, the School was kickstarted by an Inaugural Lecture by Prof. Sandra Gil Araujo, CONICET Researcher at the Centre for Research and Study of Culture and Society, from Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Her lecture was about socio-anthropological perspectives for the study of migratory and refugee policy. During the rest of the afternoon, MIGRA’s principal researchers – Mayra Feddersen, Patricio Domínguez and Pablo Muñoz – gave lectures on qualitative methods, quantitative methods and data, respectively.
On the second day of the School, David Cook-Martin, UNC Chapel Hill professor and Principal Researcher, Alejandra Abufhele, gave each a lecture on the fundamentals, design and implementation of mixed methods studies. During the afternoon, we held the Project Clinic, an instance where students presented their research projects and received comments from other students and professors.
Lastly, on Wednesday, a Workshop was held. MIGRA has been developing a Special Issue that is under review. Therefore, on Wednesday, the authors of the articles that are under review for the Special Issue presented their articles, and received feedback. This was the only day were qualitative and quantitative methods were separated.
Overall, this year’s Winter School not only provided attendants with a deeper knowledge on different methodological approaches. It also promoted a deeply interdisciplinary dialogue between a wide range of fields and countries. Participants highlighted the usefulness of this dialogue and, as main speaker Sandra Gil claimed, “Knowledge must be produced in collective”.
