Proyección al Medio Externo (PME)—or Outreach and External Engagement—is a core component of Chile’s Millennium Science Initiative model, which requires all funded centers to develop structured strategies to connect their research with broader societal audiences. PME activities are designed to ensure that scientific knowledge does not remain confined to academia, but instead contributes meaningfully to public understanding, policy development, and community well-being.
At MIGRA, PME is understood not simply as dissemination, but as a bidirectional, participatory process. We work closely with migrant communities, civil society organizations, local governments, and educational institutions to create spaces where knowledge flows in multiple directions. Our PME strategy involves:
where migrants are not only subjects of study but also active participants and co-creators of knowledge.
particularly in regions with high levels of migration, such as northern Chile and vulnerable urban areas in Santiago.
linking outreach activities with the training of young researchers, particularly through thesis projects at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
through documentaries, exhibitions, media engagement, and policy-oriented events.
Through PME, MIGRA seeks to humanize migration, challenge discriminatory narratives, and promote informed, inclusive public dialogue. We view outreach not as an add-on, but as a critical axis that strengthens the social relevance and democratic value of our scientific work.
